Born on the Water

Eastern North Carolina in 1982 was a place shaped by water. The Tar and Neuse rivers carved their way toward the sounds, tobacco fields gave way to salt marshes, and the coastal trade — boats, docks, waterways — set the rhythm of working life. It was here, in Greenville, that Parrott Canvas opened its doors with a single, uncompromising purpose: to make canvas goods worthy of the Carolina coast.

The company's first work was marine canvasware — the fitted covers, protective housings, and purpose-built fabric structures that boats depend on. This was demanding, exacting craft. Every piece had to contend with relentless UV exposure, salt spray, humidity that could rot inferior stitching from the inside out. There was no hiding behind novelty or trend. A boat cover either held or it didn't. A seam either lasted the season or it failed, publicly, in front of people who knew exactly what proper canvas work looked like.

That environment didn't just set a standard. It built one — stitch by stitch, season by season — into the hands and habits of every person who worked in the Parrott Canvas shop.

When the Fabric Chose Us

Some validations come from customers. Some come from awards. The one that changed Parrott Canvas came from the supply chain itself.

Glen Raven Mills — one of the most respected fabric wholesalers in America, the company behind some of the most performance-driven textiles in the world — took notice of how Parrott Canvas worked. The materials. The construction. The refusal to cut corners on things that mattered. And they made a proposition: take this same craft and build your own original line of bags.

It was a turning point that required no leap of faith. The techniques were already there — double-stitched seams, heavy nylon thread, reinforced stress points at every load-bearing junction. What had been developed to protect a boat through a Carolina summer could protect everything a person chose to carry through a life. The philosophy simply found a new form.

Forty years is a long time in American manufacturing. Factories have closed. Supply chains have moved offshore. The word "handcrafted" has been borrowed, diluted, and stretched across products that have never seen a craftsperson's hands. Through all of it, Parrott Canvas has done one thing: kept making, in Greenville, the way they always have.

The work has grown in scope: corporate promotions, special events, regattas, university athletic departments, catalog merchants, the entertainment industry but never in compromise. Every bag that leaves the facility carries the same construction logic that began with a boat cover in 1982. Nearly every seam taped and double-stitched. Top-quality fabrics, zippers, and fasteners used without exception. Designs refined across decades of real customer use, not trend cycles.
